Kumihimo – 3/18/2017

IMG_0882

At our March meeting I will be teaching an introduction to kumihimo, or Japanese braiding. This will be followed by a more advanced class at our June meeting taught by Marcia White. (Thanks, Marcia!)

If you want to make a simple braided necklace or bracelet, you will need to bring the following materials.

A kumihimo loom (available at craft stores) or online or perhaps you could make your own

At least 8 kumihimo bobbins (16 of you want to learn advanced techniques). The bobbins keep the cords from tangling. If you don’t want to invest in them at this time, you can do without but realize the cords will get tangled more easily.

Two skeins of embroidery floss

In order to finish the project you will need findings and some superglue. See below for the kind of findings you will need.

For our project we will make the necklace in the lower right hand corner of the above picture.

I highly recommend that you go online to primitiveoriginals.com and order their kumihimo beginning kit for $12. This will give you everything you need to make the aforementioned necklace (including the pendant) except for the glue. It includes an instruction booklet. If you already have a loom and bobbins you can order the necklace items by themselves for $5 (necklace kit with filigree focal point).

If you purchase your items elsewhere you need to know that to finish the necklace you will need the twist-magnetic end cap set that is sold at primitiveoriginals.com or something just like it. I was unable to find any findings at Hobby Lobby that would work. You may want to wait until after the March class to get the findings or you can order them online at primitive originals.

Kumihimo is a fun, portable, and inexpensive hobby. I hope to see you in March!

Stories Behind Creations – 11/19/2016

Good Evening Everyone,
Just wanted to send a reminder about our meeting this coming Saturday, November 19th, 2016… Our program is more of a sharing event!
Bring a fibery itemย that you have made or received and share the story behind it… if you have gifted the item, or no longer have it… a picture is perfectly fine… and if you don’t have a picture, no problem… come tell your story anyway!
Date: Saturday, November 19th, 2016
Time: 10am to Noon
Location: Girl Scout House behind First Presbyterian Church, 637 6th St. NW, Winter Haven, FL 33881

Shuttle Tatting with Anita Hebert – 10/15/2016

Shuttle Tatting with Anita Hebert

–> Anita will be doing a demonstration on shuttle tatting for the guild and will have her book available for purchase ๐Ÿ™‚

Date: October 15th, 2016

Time: 10am to Noon

Location: Girl Scout House @ First Presbyterian Church
637 6th Street NW, Winter Haven, FL 33881

Anita has been selling her remaining book inventory and they are going fast. The books will NOT be republished, so if you want one, we must know soon. I understand there may only be thirty or so copies left, but when they’re gone, that’s it!

Anita has graciously agreed to hold back copies for our guild, however, with that in mind, we must make a commitment so that she can hold them back for us. This was my idea, not Anita’s, as I want to make sure we are assured of getting a copy and not hold her back from continuing to sell her inventory. Keep in mind, I’ve seen Anita’s book for $25.00 plus shipping & handling.

How this will work is, let me know how many books you would like, we may have to limit it to one copy per person if we get close to her remaining inventory. It would be best to bring cash on October 15, 2016. Once you say you want a book, you will be responsible to purchase the reserved book. Anita has also agreed to bring extra copies if they are available when she comes to the guild, but there are no guarantees.

Remember the cost for the book is $10.00 and includes one free lesson, which will be arranged at a later date.anita-003-copy

For each book that is ordered by our guild, Anita will bring a shuttle and thread for your use on 10-15-16. The shuttle will be available for purchase directly from Anita, cost to be determined, but you do not have to purchase the shuttle.

As we know from past experience, shuttle tatting will take time and patience, and is really a small group teaching activity.

Additional lessons are available at a cost of $5.00 per person and Anita will come to you. After the demo, Anita will be prepared to further discuss scheduling of the free lesson and additional lessons if you are interested.

Hope to see you there!

Spread the Knowledge – 9/17/16

Date: Saturday, September 17th, 2016

Time: 10am to Noon

Place: 637 6th Street NW, Winter Haven, FL 33881

*** The September meeting is all about sharing what you know and learning a little more! Do you use a certain website to find patterns? Know of a place to buy the best fabric? Have a source for hard to find items? Or a place for bonding with other like minded fiber lovers???

This meeting is to share and receive knowledge from other members!!! Ravelry? Facebook? LYS? Specialty Shops? Any information could be useful to someone else!

Please be sure to bring a project to work on, just in case… We can always use more tray toppers for our Meals on Wheels project (wink, wink)

Hope everyone can make it!
Ann
