Spread the Knowledge – 9/17/16

Date: Saturday, September 17th, 2016

Time: 10am to Noon

Place: 637 6th Street NW, Winter Haven, FL 33881

*** The September meeting is all about sharing what you know and learning a little more! Do you use a certain website to find patterns? Know of a place to buy the best fabric? Have a source for hard to find items? Or a place for bonding with other like minded fiber lovers???

This meeting is to share and receive knowledge from other members!!! Ravelry? Facebook? LYS? Specialty Shops? Any information could be useful to someone else!

Please be sure to bring a project to work on, just in case… We can always use more tray toppers for our Meals on Wheels project (wink, wink)

Hope everyone can make it!

Branch Weaving! – August 20th, 2016

Our next fiber guild meeting is fast approaching… this coming Saturday, we will be having a program on “Branch Weaving” or “Weaving in a Branch”.

–> This lovely “Branch Weaving” piece was created by Natural Suburbia… you can check it out here: http://www.naturalsuburbia.com/2010/08/weaving.html

Date: August 20th, 2016
Time: 10am to noon (may run a little later)
Location: Girl Scout House – 637 6th Street NW, Winter Haven, FL 33881

This project is a simple and fun way to take things around you and create a one of a kind piece of art! You can use your Branch Weaving to spruce up a wall in your house… as a decoration for your front door… or as a nice handmade gift for a friend… the possibilities are endless!

Supplies Needed:
A Branch (find any branch you like, just make sure it has a “V”)
Darning Needle / Long Needle (not required, but will make your life easier)
Yarn (we will have yarn at the meeting, but if there is something special you would like to use, please bring it along)

As always, we would love to see what you have been working on… bring along your Show and Share for us all to see and admire 🙂

Hope to see you Saturday!

Christmas in July – 7/16/2016

Meeting: Christmas in July
Date: July 16th, 2016
Time: 10am to Noon

I hope to see many of you this Saturday for our Christmas in July celebration!

Each year we make Christmas-themed tray decorations for Meals on Wheels. In the past, we have each done our own thing, and you are certainly welcome to do so this year. But I thought, why not make something as a group and have fun at the same time? My Christmas in July idea was born. And I really hope it is a success.

There will some Christmas decor, Christmas treats adapted for summer, and a Christmas-themed door prize. There will be several projects to choose from. I have started 47 fabric bells and would love help finishing them. This project involves hand sewing. I will have some supplies but it would help if you could bring any of the following:

Red and/or green thread
Sewing needle

Judy and Lyle are preparing a tree ornament, and perhaps another design. This project will involve decorating felt by gluing on sequins and such. If you have any of the following, it would be helpful:

Glue that dries clear – ELMERS WILL WORK!
Marking pen or pencil
Trinkets to glue on the ornaments

If you don’t have any supplies, no worries, we will have them for you.

Your Board and other members have been active this month helping make our Guild the best it can be. Our bylaws have been updated to reflect a vote two years ago to combine the offices of Secretary and Treasurer if necessary. Thanks much to Betsy Grizzard for typing these! I will distribute copies at the meeting. The Board has met via email and selected the required 5th member of the Board as required by the bylaws. I’ll announce our new Board member at the meeting.

I was astounded to realize that, since I took office during the May meeting, FIFTEEN members have volunteered in one way or another. Wow! That’s amazing! Thank you !

If you haven’t paid your dues for this year, I hope you will do so. You get to vote, save money at some stores by showing your card, borrow books and equipment from our library, take free stuff from our free table, and, best of all, get to say that you are a member of the Polk County Fiber Guild! Such a deal for $15!

Hope to see you soon,

Mary Parent

NO More Blankets…

Over the last two years, the Polk County Fiber Guild’s members have been sewing, knitting, and crocheting baby blankets for the Regency Medical Center in Winter Haven, FL.

Janet, our go to on this project, received a letter from the Regency thanking the members for all of the blankets that have been donated… but as of March 1st, they are no longer going to be accepting blankets.

We are not sure why this has changed, but I am assuming it has something to do with the new owners of the hospital.

We are currently looking for another “group” that could benefit from our blankets. I will inform the members as I obtain more information.

Thank you for your time,
